Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus:

Xiaomi has just unveiled two new budget smartphones Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus at an event in China featuring next generation 18:9 displays with narrow bezels.

Both the devices run Android 7.0 Nougat based on Xiaomi’s custom MIUI 9 .

Design wise Xiaomi Redmi 5 is fairly similar to that Xiaomi Redmi 4 with the rounded edges and trendy 18:9  display.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 has a 5.7-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and pixel of 1440 x 720..

Powering the Redmi 5 the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset, 1.8GHz octa-core processor, and Adreno 506 GPU. Xiaomi Redmi 5 has 2 variants, one comes with 2GB of RAM and 16 GB onboard storage and another comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage which will be expandable via microSD card. There is a fingerprint sensor mounted at the back of the phone.


The device has a 3300 mAh battery. The battery is charged via a micro USB slot which means no fast charging this time. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack placed next to the charging port as well.

The Redmi 5 has a 12MP camera at the back with 1.25-micron pixel size. The camera records 1080P videos at 30fps. To the front of the device is a 5MP camera with Beautify 3.0

Redmi 5 Plus is The bigger sibling of the Xiaomi Redmi 5. It has a massive 5.99-inch display with a 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution, translated to an 18:9 aspect ratio with rounded corners.

But powering the Redmi 5 the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset, which is 2.0GHz octa-core processor, Adreno 506 GPU, this devise also comes with 2 variants , one has 3GB of RAM and of onboard storage while another has 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of onboard storage. Both devices can be expandable via microSD card. The fingerprint sensor mounted at the back of the device which has become a Redmi signature.

The Redmi 5 Plus is has a massive 4000 mAh battery which has a standby time of up to 17 days , claimed by Xiaomi. The device has a micro USB port for charging and data syncing along with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Just like the Redmi 5, the Redmi 5 Plus also has a 12MP primary camera and a 5MP secondary camera with beautify 3.0 software.

Still There is no word on the availability in the global market by Xiaomi. But, considering the popularity of the Redmi series in India, it won’t take long time to hit the Indian market.


The Redmi 5 is priced at CNY 799 approx  Rs 7,800 for the 2GB RAM/16GB storage variant and CNY 899 approx Rs 8,800. for the 3GBRAM/ 32GB storage variant .


The Redmi 5 Plus is priced starting at CNY 999 approx Rs. 9,800 for the 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant and CNY 1299 approx Rs. 12,700 for the 4GB RAM/64GB storage option and both devices will be available in Black, Blue, Gold and Rose Gold colours.
